Indiana’s Biggest Agile Conference Returns

AgileIndy Conference 2018 is just around the corner. Scheduled for May 11, 2018, the AgileIndy Conference will be held in the heart of downtown Indianapolis. Get your tickets to AgileIndy while they are still available.

Why should you attend?

There are, of course, valuable sessions to attend and learn valuable lessons. There will undoubtedly be a keynote talk with inspiring thoughts. And, of course, there is the laid-back conference reception. But every conference has those, so why attend AgileIndy?

In three words, I’d say the reason to attend is “people and interactions.” Regional conferences are an excellent chance to meet agile thought leaders and practitioners from around the region. In addition to the attendees from Indiana, there will be many folks from the Chicago, Columbus, Louisville, and other surrounding cities.

Do you have something to present?

Disclaimer: I am not involved in organizing the conference. This information is the best that I have, but is NOT official guidance from any of the conference organizers.

If you have a session you’d like to be considered for the conference, it is time to get those proposals created. The process for submitting ideas to AgileIndy is different than many conferences. While many conferences have a single deadline for all submissions, and then the sessions are evaluated all at once, AgileIndy will be accepting proposals on a rolling basis. So, if you get a compelling session submitted early, it might get accepted early.

For consideration, send an email to AgileIndyspeakers@gmail.com and include the following information:

  • Title of Presentation – 50 characters max
  • Bio of Presenter – 280 characters max
  • Abstract of Talk – 280 characters max
  • Headshot of Presenter
  • Reason why your presentations should be selected.  This can include links to videos, slides, and a description of how your talk will flow.

The final cutoff for submissions is March 26, 2018, but don’t wait until the last minute.

Have you attended AgileIndy in the past? If so, what is your favorite reason?

Agile and Beyond – A session for agile coaches

On April 30, Agile Coach Susan DiFabio and I will be sharing our session “A Coach 4-Pack” at the Agile and Beyond conference in Dearborn, Michigan.  In this session, participants will experience at least four different simulation activities that they can take with them and use right away.LegoSeriousPlay1

More importantly than just experiencing the activity, we will share techniques for effectively debriefing participants. After all, while it can be fun to facilitate a simulation, you don’t want your participants going away thinking “What the f*** was that?” If you don’t do a debrief, you run that risk.

Take a Trip to the Principles Office

Agile Principles PresentationUnderstanding, and embracing, the agile principles is fundamental to becoming Agile. That is why I chose to present my session “take a trip to the principles office” at the Agile and Beyond conference in Dearborn, Michigan. I want to encourage people to consider the principles as they encounter novel situations and work to determine their best path forward.

The presentation Take a Trip to the Principles Office is available for download as a PDF.

The Take a Trip to the Principles Office worksheet is available for download as a PDF.

If you are interested in the journey lines activity, you can find that on the Coaching Agile Teams site.

SF Agile 2011 – Quick Reflections

I authored most of this on my flight from San Francisco back to Midway last night…my Southwest flight did not have wifi for me to post it, however.

It’s Friday night, and I’m traveling home from San Francisco where I had a great experience at the inaugural SFAgile conference. The conference had high quality speakers, most of the speakers were also able to stay for the duration of the two-day conference. Not only did I receive a lot of value from the formal sessions, the conversations outside of the sessions were particularly valuable(See note 1 below).

SF Agile was an intimate, single-track conference that covered a breadth of topics, including Lean Startup, Lean UX, Teams and Product Stewardship, an Innovation Game, escaping timeboxes (new term materialized: “neo-post-agile”)… And that was Day 1!

Day 2 had topics that included  Agile Leadership, a panel discussion with audience-selected topics, lessons from Dr. Who, Coaching, the team/business bridge,  and happiness.  Although I neglected to put a mark on the “Value to Time Invested” retrospective chart (sorry Angeline), I will posthumously put it to “up and to the  right,” which we learned at the conference is where all good data on a graph goes.

Each day culminated in  a trip down Market street to Blu to socialize with other attendees. The conference’s size allowed for interaction with almost all of the attendees. This is the second conference this year that I have attended that had a single-track format( See Note 2 below).  I think I am a fan of the format. The single-track format creates a shared context for all the attendees. During breaks and after the day’s  formal activities, there is a common reference point that helps create cohesion as attendees can discuss a range of ideas presented throughout the day.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Thank you to all the sponsors for making the event very affordable for attendees.
Thank you for allowing me to share how lean principles and getting close to the customer and market were instrumental in shaping my path to being an entrepreneur.
Thank you Angeline and the rest of the folks who contributed to making this event a success. I hope to attend next year’s event.

For those of you who did not go to the conference, consider putting it on your calendar for next June.

Note 1. One example of the additional value was with Joshua Kerievsky’s who recommended the book The Secrets of Consulting by Gerald Weinberg, I actually had to put that book down to capture some of my reflections on the conference.

Note 2. KalamazooX was the other conference. That, too, was a valuable conference and I am way overdue to create a blog post about that. KalamazooX was a very nice one day conference focusing on the softer skills required in technology. Sorry Michael Eaton for the delay in writing about that conference. There was no flight home from Kalamazoo for me to draft it!
